About Comerong Island

Comerong Island is an island at the mouth of the Shoalhaven River in New South Wales, separated from the mainland by Berry's Canal, hand-dug by convicts in 1822 as Australia's first navigable canal. Around half the island is the Comerong Island Nature Reserve, created in 1986, while the western section is still farmed, mainly for dairying. The island is reached by a cable ferry from Numbaa.
