About South Gundagai
South Gundagai is a locality on the Murrumbidgee River opposite the town of Gundagai in the Riverina region of New South Wales, on Wiradjuri land. The site was settled from the late 1830s, when the district around the river crossing was gazetted, and today it is a quiet rural area facing the historic town across the water. The locality is remembered for the flood of 24 June 1852, when the town on the flats was overwhelmed and between 80 and 100 people died in what remains Australia's deadliest recorded flood, an event in which Wiradjuri men saved many lives using bark canoes and a rowboat.
