About Wickham (NSW)
Wickham is an inner suburb of Newcastle in the City of Newcastle, New South Wales, located 3 kilometres west-northwest of the Newcastle central business district. The name is a misspelling of Whickham, a suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne in England, and was proclaimed a municipality on 27 February 1871. The Aboriginal people of the area are the Awabakal and the first mayor was James Hannell. Wickham railway station opened as part of the Main North line in 1857 and closed on 25 December 2014 when the Newcastle line was truncated for light rail construction. Newcastle Interchange opened on 15 October 2017 connecting with Newcastle Light Rail. Wickham Public School was built in 1904 in Edwardian style. The former Wickham council chambers built in 1889 are now used as a preschool.
