About Maryville
Maryville is an inner suburb of Newcastle in the City of Newcastle, New South Wales, located 4 kilometres northwest of the Newcastle central business district. Named after Mary Hannell and previously known as Smedmore, the suburb is a harbourside area surrounded by the Throsby Creek system. Previously considered an industrial suburb with working-class miners' cottages, Maryville has undergone significant gentrification and become one of Newcastle's most expensive suburbs. The Throsby Waters Cycleway and Islington Park are notable features. The suburb is close to Beaumont Street in Hamilton, one of Newcastle's premier dining and shopping strips.
