About Whitebridge
Whitebridge is a residential suburb of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, located 11 kilometres south-west of Newcastle CBD and two kilometres east of Charlestown on the eastern side of Lake Macquarie. Named after a white truss bridge crossing the Belmont Railway Line, the suburb is on the traditional country of the Awabakal people. Coal mining began in 1888 at the Burwood No.3 Colliery, one of Australia's greatest coal producers, which operated for almost a century until closure in 1982. Whitebridge High School, opened in 1963, serves the area.
