About The Hill
The Hill is an inner city, residential suburb of Newcastle, in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia, located immediately south of Newcastle's central business district. The Hill is filled with historic Victorian terraces and was the site of a penal settlement proclaimed by Governor King in 1804, which operated as a place of secondary punishment for reoffending convicts until 1822. The first private coal mine in Australia, the A Pit, was established here by the Australian Agricultural Company in 1828.
