About Shortland
Shortland is a residential suburb in the outer west of Newcastle, New South Wales, situated approximately 12 kilometres from the central business district. Named after Lieutenant John Shortland, who entered the Hunter River estuary in 1797 while pursuing runaway convicts and became the first European to chart the harbour, the suburb is bordered by the internationally recognised Hunter Wetlands Centre, part of the Ramsar Convention-listed Hunter Estuary Wetlands. The area features the Shortland Waters Golf Course, numerous parks and reserves, and is served by Sandgate Road as its main transport thoroughfare, with Sandgate and Warabrook railway stations providing access to the Hunter Line.
