About Rathmines
Rathmines is a residential suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, located on the western shore of Lake Macquarie between the towns of Toronto and Morisset. Named after Rathmines in Ireland, the area was first settled by Europeans around 1840 on the traditional land of the Awabakal people. Orchards, vineyards and cattle were the early industries. A Royal Australian Air Force base operated from 1939 to 1963 and is heritage-listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. The artist Sir William Dobell was once responsible for the camouflage of the RAAF base during World War II. The suburb features a disc golf course at Styles Point, the first in Lake Macquarie, and Rathmines Oval is home to Westlakes Wildcats Football Club.
