About Merewether
Merewether is a beachside suburb of the City of Newcastle in New South Wales, located three kilometres south-west of the Newcastle central business district. Originally part of the Burwood Estate, it takes its name from owner Edward Christopher Merewether. Incorporated as a Municipality in 1885, the area was shaped by coal mining with the last pits closing in August 1954. Merewether Beach is home to the Merewether Surf Life Saving Club, the oldest in the Hunter Region, and the Merewether Surfboard Club, the most successful boardriders club in Australia. The Merewether Ocean Baths at the southern end of the beach are the largest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere. Approximately 44 percent of the suburb is uninhabited bushland forming part of the Glenrock State Conservation Area.
