About Lambton
Lambton is a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, located approximately 8 kilometres west of the city centre in the Hunter Region. The traditional custodians of the land are the Awabakal people. Named after the Lambton Colliery opened in 1863, the suburb derives its name from Lord Lambton, Earl of Durham, a family friend of the mine's manager Thomas Croudace. It was proclaimed a municipality in 1871 and operated independently until 1938. Lambton Park, the suburb's focal point, features a heritage rotunda (1890), memorial gates honouring local service personnel, and a war memorial swimming centre. Lambton was the first Newcastle municipality to adopt electric street lighting in 1890.
