About Coal Point
Coal Point is a residential suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, located on a peninsula south-east of Toronto and Carey Bay on the western side of Lake Macquarie. Coal mining at Ebenezer Colliery operated from 1841 to around 1906. The first coal mine was operated by Reverend Lancelot Threlkeld, a missionary to the Awabakal people and first European landholder of the area. Explorer Ludwig Leichhardt visited the mine in 1842. The high socioeconomic character of the suburb relates to the 1887 Toronto Estate subdivision by the Excelsior Land Investment and Building Company, marketed to the well-to-do. Coal Point Progress Association established in 1946 raised money for Progress Hall, one of the last community-owned halls in Lake Macquarie.
