About Cardiff (NSW)
Cardiff is a suburb of Lake Macquarie, about 17 km west-south-west of Newcastle, named by a Welsh settler after his home city of Cardiff. From the 1880s it was a coal-mining centre with several collieries and branch railway lines, and the NSW Government Railway Workshops were relocated here from Newcastle in 1928. Today it is a settled residential suburb straddling the Main North railway line.
