About Narrabri
Narrabri is a town on the Namoi River in the North West Slopes of New South Wales, about 521 km north-west of Sydney, where the Kamilaroi and Newell highways meet. It lies on the traditional country of the Gamilaroi people, and the town's name is of Aboriginal origin, possibly meaning snake place or big creek. Proclaimed in 1860, Narrabri became the centre of a major cotton-growing district. It is home to the CSIRO's Australia Telescope Compact Array at the Paul Wild Observatory, and lies near Mount Kaputar National Park and the Pilliga Forest, the largest remnant temperate forest in eastern Australia.
