About Gravesend
Gravesend is a small village on the North West Slopes of New South Wales, on the Gwydir Highway 25 km west of Warialda, beside the Gwydir River. The first Europeans through the district were Allan Cunningham's exploring party in 1827, and the village, which grew from a railway fettler's camp around 1900, is believed to be named for the site of a massacre of Aboriginal people in 1837 on Gamilaraay land. In the 1930s a local research station bred the cactoblastis moths released to control prickly pear, and today Gravesend is a wheat and livestock centre with a historical museum and an annual rodeo.
