About Gilgai
Gilgai is a town on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales, 10 kilometres south of Inverell on Thunderbolts Way, in Inverell Shire. The name is an Aboriginal word meaning waterhole. The surrounding area was mined for tin through concertina shafts, unique in Australia, and sapphires, rubies and some diamonds are found there. Wine grapes were first grown here in 1849 and reintroduced in 1968, and beef cattle production and wine are the main products. The public school, built in 1878, used bricks baked on site.
