About Rufus
Rufus is a vast and sparsely populated outback locality in far western New South Wales, about 910 kilometres west of Sydney. Named after the Rufus River which flows from Lake Victoria to the Murray River, the area was the site of the 1841 Rufus River Massacre during the early conflict between European overlanders and the traditional owners.
