About Corowa
Corowa is a town on the bank of the Murray River in New South Wales, opposite Wahgunyah in Victoria, and the largest town in the Federation Council. The name may come from a Wiradjuri word meaning 'rocky river crossing'. The town grew around John Foord's punt across the river and was proclaimed a township in 1858; the first bridge to Wahgunyah was a private toll bridge completed in 1862. Corowa was the site of the 1893 Corowa Conference, whose federation proposals helped lead to the union of the Australian colonies in 1901.
