Warrawong is a suburb of Wollongong in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia, situated on the northeast corner of Lake Illawarra. Located approximately 8 kilometres south of Wollongong's central business district and 90 kilometres south of Sydney, it falls within the City of Wollongong local government area. The name derives from an Aboriginal word with various recorded meanings, including "windy hills" or "a windy place on a hill." Long a farming area following the first land grants in 1815, Warrawong was known by several earlier names, including Steeltown, Kembla Estate, and New Kembla, before adopting its current name. The suburb began to develop as a residential area in the 1930s. Warrawong Plaza, originally opened in 1960 and formerly known as Westfield Warrawong, is a major regional shopping centre and a key commercial hub for the southern Illawarra.
