About Nelson Bay (NSW)

Nelson Bay is a tourist town on the southern shore of Port Stephens in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, about 60 km north-east of Newcastle. It is the main centre for dolphin and whale watching on Port Stephens, and also a base for surfing, diving and fishing. The town, whose eastern side lies within Tomaree National Park, is watched over by the Nelson Head Light, an unusual lighthouse built in 1875, and grew from early settlement by Captain John Dalton, who built his home on the hill above the bay in 1882.
