About Broke (NSW)
Broke is a village in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, located 24 kilometres south of Singleton in the Singleton Shire. Named by Major Thomas Mitchell after his friend Sir Charles Broke-Vere, the village sits in the heart of the Broke-Fordwich wine sub-region, known for boutique wineries producing semillon, shiraz and chardonnay. Explorers first reached the area in 1818 and land grants followed in 1824, with John Blaxland receiving a grant after finding a route to the Hunter Valley.
