About Aberdeen (NSW)
Aberdeen is a small town in the upper Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia, in Upper Hunter Shire. It is 12 kilometres north of Muswellbrook on the New England Highway, situated beside the Hunter River between Muswellbrook and Scone. The town, laid out in 1838, was named after George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, a friend of early settler Thomas Potter MacQueen. It was long associated with the Aberdeen Meatworks, founded in 1890 and the town's main employer for over a century until it closed in 1999. Aberdeen hosts an annual Highland Games on the first weekend of July, reflecting the district's Scottish heritage.
