About Aberdare

Aberdare is a residential suburb of Cessnock in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, located two kilometres east-south-east of Cessnock and 153 kilometres north of Sydney. Established in 1904 and gazetted as a town in 1905, the suburb is in the heart of the Lower Hunter coal mining region. George Brown found coal in the area in the 1800s, creating a land boom between 1903 and 1923. The heritage-listed Aberdare Central Colliery Company Houses on Cessnock Street are a local landmark.
