About Wilcannia

Wilcannia is a small town in far north-western New South Wales, on the Darling River where the Barrier Highway crosses it, about 965 km from Sydney. During the river-boat era of the mid-19th century the town was Australia's third-largest inland port, serving the wool industry with wharves thronged by steamers and barges. The town stands on the traditional lands of the Barkindji people, who know the river as the Barka. It remains a service centre for the surrounding pastoral country.
