About White Cliffs
White Cliffs is an opal-mining town in outback New South Wales, in Central Darling Shire, about 255 km north-east of Broken Hill. One of Australia's best-known opal fields, it is famous for its dugout homes, carved underground by residents to escape the region's extreme heat. The field produces white and crystal seam opal, including the rare opalised 'opal pineapple' fossils.
