About Walgett

Walgett is a town in northern New South Wales and the seat of the Walgett Shire, at the junction of the Barwon and Namoi Rivers. The name comes from a Kamilaroi word meaning the meeting place of two rivers. A former paddle-steamer port on the Darling River system, Walgett is a service centre for the surrounding wool, wheat and cotton district and the gateway to the Lightning Ridge and Grawin opal fields.
