About Breelong
Breelong is a bounded rural locality of Gilgandra Shire in central-western New South Wales, situated at the junction of Wallumburrawang Creek and the Castlereagh River near Gilgandra. The pastoral landscape supports agriculture typical of the region, and the locality is on the traditional lands of the Weilwan people. Breelong is historically known for the 1900 murders of five members of the Mawbey family by Jimmy Governor and his companions — an event that received widespread publicity at the time and became the basis for Thomas Keneally's 1972 novel The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith.
