About Palmers Island
Palmers Island is a large island in the Clarence River on the far north coast of New South Wales, one of the biggest of the river's hundred islands and lying between the towns of Yamba and Maclean. Its rich floodplains have long been prime sugar cane country, and in the late 1800s a number of sugar mills operated on the island and along nearby Palmers Channel. In recent decades prawn farming has been added to the island's agriculture, and its waterways are popular for fishing.
