About South Bowenfels

South Bowenfels is a suburb of Lithgow in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia, located on Wiradjuri Country. The original settlement of Old Bowenfels dates from the 1830s, predating Lithgow by about 40 years. Named by Major Mitchell, the area is tied to the coal mining and manufacturing heritage of the Lithgow region. It features the only known inland heavy anti-aircraft gun emplacement in New South Wales, built during World War II.
