About Larbert

Larbert is a rural locality in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, lying mostly north of the Kings Highway between Bungendore and Braidwood where it crosses the Shoalhaven River. The area is on the traditional lands of the Walbanga people, a group of the Yuin nation, and was known to early colonists as Kurraducbidgee. Settlers took up land from the 1820s, and in 1843 Larbert was proclaimed as a planned township on the road from Braidwood to Jervis Bay, but the Shoalhaven flood of 1853 showed the site was flood-prone and the town never grew. A riverside settlement with a public house and post office survived until a flood in 1925, and gold was dredged from the riverbed in the early 1900s. The area is now quiet grazing and farming country, including the heritage-listed Arnprior homestead.
