About Jugiong
Jugiong is a locality and town on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River near its confluence with Jugiong Creek, in the Hilltops Council local government area of New South Wales. It lies just off the Hume Highway, about 30 kilometres south-west of Bookham and 40 kilometres north-east of Gundagai. The name is a settler rendering of a Wiradjuri word said to mean 'valley of the crows'. The district was first grazed in the 1820s by Henry O'Brien on the Jugiong Run, and a town site was reserved in 1853. A memorial honours Sergeant Edmund Parry, shot dead by bushranger John Gilbert between Jugiong and Gundagai in 1864, and cricketer Richie Benaud spent part of his early life in the town.
