About Gunning
Gunning is a small town on the Old Hume Highway in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, about 75 km north of Canberra, in the Upper Lachlan Shire. Settled from 1821, when Hamilton Hume took up the first sheep run beyond the colony's declared limit of settlement, it was an early Cobb & Co coaching stop and, in 1875, the terminus of the Main Southern railway line. The district became famous for some of Australia's highest-quality Merino wool clips, and the town served Sydney-Melbourne traffic on the Hume Highway until it was bypassed in 1995; the Gunning Wind Farm has operated nearby since 2011.
