About Reid (ACT)
Reid is a suburb of Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory, located directly next to Civic 2 kilometres east of the Canberra central business district. Named after Sir George Reid, the fourth Prime Minister of Australia, the suburb was named in 1928 with streets named after Aboriginal words. Anzac Parade is a ceremonial boulevard separating Reid and Campbell running from Lake Burley Griffin to the Australian War Memorial along Canberra's primary land axis. St John the Baptist Church is the oldest church in Canberra with a foundation stone laid in 1841 and consecrated in 1845. The heritage-listed Reid Housing Precinct was built in 1926 and 1927 on Garden City principles to house public servants before the opening of provisional Parliament House in 1927. The Canberra Institute of Technology is located in Reid.
