About O'Sullivan Beach
O'Sullivan Beach is a seaside suburb in the southern Adelaide metropolitan area within the City of Onkaparinga, South Australia, with a unique postcode of 5166. Named after Ignatius O'Sullivan who arrived from Ireland and settled in the area in 1840, the suburb was subdivided in 1926. The Kaurna people used the coastal area for seasonal residence and the mouth of Christie Creek was one of the last recorded sites where traditional Kaurna burial practices were observed, with nearly 40,000 years of use. A large boat ramp with protective breakwaters provides access to Gulf St Vincent. An artificial shellfish reef was constructed 500 metres offshore in November 2021, a 5-hectare area seeded with native flat oysters built from limestone rock and oyster shells.
