About Newmerella

Newmerella is a small settlement on the western side of the Snowy River in East Gippsland, about 5 km south-west of Orbost. The name is thought to mean 'valley of plenty'. The Newmerella pastoral run was taken up in 1847, and from the 1870s selectors cleared the river flats, growing maize that was barged down the river to Marlo. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway, opened in 1916 with its station on the Newmerella side of the river, brought a township and a sleeper-cutting industry. The settlement still has a primary school and service station.
