About Prahran
Prahran is an inner suburb of Melbourne, about 5 km south-east of the central business district within the City of Stonnington. Its main thoroughfare, Chapel Street, grew with cable trams in the 1880s into the city's premier shopping street south of the Yarra, rivalling the central business district by World War I and now the largest shopping strip outside it. Prahran Market, established in the 1860s and on its present site since 1881, is one of Melbourne's best-known food markets. The suburb was a city in its own right from 1879 until its council merged with Malvern in 1994.
