About East Melbourne

East Melbourne is an inner-city suburb of Melbourne, two kilometres east of the central business district, within the City of Melbourne. Laid out on a grid by surveyor Robert Hoddle in 1837, it retains a dense concentration of Victorian and institutional buildings, beside Fitzroy Gardens, Yarra Park and the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It was home to Superintendent Charles La Trobe, whose Jolimont estate on Wellington Parade served as Victoria's first Government House; his prefabricated cottage now stands near the Botanic Gardens. The suburb was listed as an historic precinct in the Register of the National Estate in 1981.
