About Katanning
Katanning is a town in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, about 277 km south-east of Perth. The name comes from a Noongar word meaning meeting place, where the territory of three Aboriginal groups met. The town grew around the Great Southern Railway, opened in 1889, and was gazetted in 1898. It is one of Australia's most multicultural regional centres, with a large Cocos Malay community.
