About Portland (Vic.)
Portland is a city on Portland Bay in south-western Victoria and the oldest European settlement in the state, established by Edward Henty in 1834, a year before Melbourne was founded. The bay was named by explorer James Grant in 1800 in honour of the Duke of Portland, and its waters had drawn whalers decades earlier. Portland was long the only deep-sea port between Adelaide and Melbourne and is a gateway to the Budj Bim cultural landscape, a World Heritage site created by the Gunditjmara people.
