About Tallygaroopna
Tallygaroopna is a town in the Goulburn Valley of Victoria, on the Goulburn Valley Highway about 207 km north of Melbourne and 15 km north of Shepparton. It takes its name from the Tallygaroopna pastoral run, taken up in 1841 and for a time held by Sherbourne Sheppard, after whom Shepparton is named; the name is thought to come from an Aboriginal word meaning 'big tree'. The run was subdivided for farming in the 1870s and the town grew after the railway arrived in 1881. The district remains a centre for irrigated agriculture, with a Soldiers Memorial Hall built in 1924.
