About Katamatite
Katamatite is a town in the Murray Valley irrigation area of northern Victoria, on Boosey Creek near its junction with Broken Creek, about 42 km north-east of Shepparton. Its name comes from the Kwat Kwat people and was the name of a local creek. The township was surveyed in 1874 after pastoral runs were opened for closer settlement, with wheat farmers arriving from 1876. A private tramway linked Katamatite to the Dookie railway line in 1890 and was absorbed into the Victorian Railways network in 1896. Since irrigation water reached the district in 1939, dairying has largely replaced the original wheat paddocks.
