About Cohuna

Cohuna is a town in the Shire of Gannawarra in northern Victoria, located 274 kilometres northwest of Melbourne on the Murray Valley Highway. Situated on the banks of Gunbower Creek, an anabranch of the Murray River, the town is the main access point to Gunbower Island, a vast red gum and box forest between the creek and the river, home to diverse native birdlife, kangaroos and emus. A post office opened in 1875 and the town was connected to Victorian Railways in 1915. Legend has it that John Farnham was discovered in Cohuna and returned in 2002 for a free one-off show, while the Bee Gees also played in the town during their early days. The annual Bridge to Bridge charity event raises funds for the Cohuna District Hospital. The suburb had a population of 2,415 at the 2016 census.
