About Koonwarra
Koonwarra is a small town straddling the South Gippsland Highway about 128 kilometres south-east of Melbourne in the South Gippsland Shire. The town is internationally significant for its Early Cretaceous fossil bed, discovered by accident in 1961 during highway realignment, which has yielded well-preserved plants, insects, spiders, crustaceans, fish and even feathers suggesting feathered dinosaur remains from a freshwater lake dating back 115 million years.
