About Yolla
Yolla is a rural community in north-west Tasmania, on the Murchison Highway about 20 km south of Wynyard and Burnie. The surrounding area is used for dairying, beef cattle, vegetables and other crops, along with forestry and mining. Near the town are the Hellyer Gorge and Oldina Forest Reserve. The name is the Tasmanian Aboriginal word for the short-tailed shearwater, or muttonbird. Yolla was originally covered in myrtle beech forest, cleared for farming after the district was settled in the 1880s.
