About Stanley (Tas.)
Stanley is a historic town at the base of The Nut, a striking 143-metre volcanic plug rising from Bass Strait on the north-west coast of Tasmania, about 80 km west of Burnie. Settled in 1826 by the Van Diemen's Land Company, it became a port, whaling and fishing centre, and today is one of the state's main tourist towns and the principal fishing port on the north-west coast. A walking track or chairlift leads to The Nut's flat summit.
