About St Marys (Tas.)
St Marys is a township at the head of the Fingal Valley on Tasmania's east coast, nestled beneath St Patricks Head and reached from the coast by the steep Elephant and St Marys passes. The town grew around a convict probation station that housed 300 convicts building the road across the mountains in the 1840s, later serving as a commercial and service centre after coal was discovered at nearby Cornwall in the 1880s. Surrounded by dairy farms and forests, it remains a base for walks such as the climb to St Patricks Head.
