About Wirrega
Wirrega is a rural locality in the Tatiara District Council of the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, located about 204 kilometres southeast of Adelaide on the Adelaide to Wolseley railway line. The mallee and agricultural country sits at a transition between the Southern Ocean coastal landscape and the inland mallee plains, named by the Potaruwutj people meaning good country for its reliable water supply. Named after John Bennie's homestead established in 1850, Wirrega railway station opened in 1886 and served as a wheat loading point with electric signalling from 1927, though passenger services ceased in 1990 and grain silos were demolished in 2024.
