About Pyap West

Pyap West is a rural locality in the Loxton Waikerie Council area of the Riverland region of South Australia, located about 192 kilometres from Adelaide. The semi-arid Riverland country features flat to gently undulating terrain receiving about 263 millimetres of annual rainfall, but benefiting from Murray River irrigation. Part of the broader Pyap irrigation settlement established in 1894 as a Village Settlement with 388 people, the area supports broadacre dryland farming of wheat and barley alongside irrigated properties closer to the river growing vineyards and citrus orchards. The writer and ethnographer Daisy Bates lived in a tent at nearby Pyap in the 1930s.
