About Compton

Compton is a locality and western suburb of Mount Gambier in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, within the City of Mount Gambier. The area sits on rich volcanic soils derived from ash deposits of Mount Gambier and Mount Schank volcanoes, on undulating plains featuring the Compton Range, a scientifically significant Pleistocene coastal barrier. Compton Station was the first European pastoral lease in the Mount Gambier district, taken up by Evelyn Pitfield Shirley Sturt in 1844, and the Compton Primary School was established in 1853.
