About Netley

Netley is a suburb of Adelaide in the City of West Torrens, South Australia, located about halfway from the Adelaide city centre to the coast on the southeastern boundary of Adelaide Airport. Named by Thomas Hudson Beare after his birthplace in Netley, Hampshire, England, Beare purchased Section 101 in 1838 and was the colony's first storekeeper, arriving at Kangaroo Island on 27 July 1836 aboard the Duke of York, one of the First Fleet of South Australia. His farm included the Halfway House inn first licensed on 26 March 1840, the name reflecting its location between the city and coast. The northern part of the suburb south of Richmond Road and west of Marion Road is predominantly industrial while the southern area is mainly residential. Adelaide Airport occupies a portion of the suburb.
