About Mile End
Mile End is an inner western suburb of Adelaide in South Australia, about 2 km from the city centre. It was established in 1860 by the South Australian Company, named for being about a mile from Adelaide's centre and after Mile End in East London. The suburb grew around the railway: Mile End station, opened in 1898, is still one mile from Adelaide station, and the goods yards were a major rail complex until the 1980s. Mile End contains the Adelaide Workmen's Homes on Rose Street, built in 1901-02 from a bequest by Thomas Elder, along with heritage-listed wine cellars, and is the national headquarters of the Australian Rail Track Corporation.
